Canada could open its borders to all fully vaccinated travellers in September
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated that fully vaccinated travellers from around the world could begin arriving by early September. Also, he noted that the Canada-U.S. border could start opening to fully vaccinated tourists in mid-August. Of course, this will depend on whether the current vaccination rate continues.
“If our current positive path of vaccination rate and public health conditions continue, Canada would be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travellers from all countries by early September.” Trudeau said during a COVID-19 status update with Canada’s premiers.
In the readout from the Prime Minister’s Office, Trudeau also indicated that Canada could expect to start allowing fully vaccinated travellers from the U.S. into Canada. This includes U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The date this could happen for non-essential travel is mid-August.
Further, the Prime Minister expressed his support of reopening plans, as well as the importance of ensuring clarity. That is why he indicated that Canada would share more details on these plans early next week. Canada’s current border restrictions are in effect until Wednesday, July 21.
Finally, First Ministers discussed the importance of working collaboratively on a proof of vaccination credential. Remember! The vaccines approved by Health Canada are Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson. The list of accepted vaccines may expand in the future as evidence becomes available.
Only travellers who received the full series of a vaccine — or a combination of vaccines — accepted by the Government of Canada (14 days prior travelling) will be allowed to bypass the 14-day quarantine. Please, read the Guide for travellers entering Canada during COVID-19.
