Canada welcomed over 250 more Afghan refugees
Today, the Minister of Immigration, Sean Fraser, announced the arrival of over 250 Afghan refugees, including 170 human rights defenders.
Overview
In July 2021, IRCC launched a dedicated refugee stream to provide solutions for human rights defenders in need of protection. This stream is known as the human rights defenders immigration stream and it has a particular focus on people at heightened risks, such as women, journalists, and LGBTQ2 human rights defenders, among others. According to the Government of Canada, “many of those arriving today have worked for decades documenting human rights abuses in Afghanistan”. They also intend to continue their work in Canada with the assistance of Canadian and international non-governmental organizations.
This latest group of arrivals will be welcomed into their host communities and will quarantine with the support of local service provider organizations. Moreover, IRCC’s Refugee Resettlement Program will help them by providing information about finding a job, improving their language skills, and living in Canada.
So far, Canada has welcomed approximately 6,750 Afghan nationals as part of the government’s commitment to resettle Afghan nationals.
