Canada will welcome 45.000 refugees this year. Check the new initiatives
Despite the many challenges of the pandemic, Canada will increase the number of refugees coming this year, from 23,500 to 45,000. The government will also expedite the processing of applications, so more refugees can quickly become permanent residents.
According to a news release, there are over 40,000 refugees with their dependents in Canada with open permanent residence applications. In 2021, almost 17,900 protected people became permanent residents.
“This year’s World Refugee Day comes at a challenging time, because the pandemic has made the situation worse. That’s why Canada is redoubling its efforts to welcome refugees. When others close their doors, we keep them open.” Immigration Minister, Marco E. L. Mendicino.
Initiatives to assist more refugees
The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced new initiatives to assist even more refugees.
Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP)
This initiative that was launched in 2018, not only to allow Canada to welcome more refugees but also “flips the stereotype” of refugees as “solely victims,” his department said.
The government has extended this project for two more years to admit up to 500 applicants. The new measures will also improve the EMPP process by expediting the processing of permanent residence applications for EMPP.
Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program
Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program is a world-leading initiative, that helps to welcome more refugees and better equip them for lasting success.
To further strengthen this program, the government is investing up to $3 million over two years to support nine organizations, including Rainbow Refugee Society in Vancouver and Ads-Up Canada Refugee Network in Toronto.
These new initiatives were announced ahead of World Refugee Day this Sunday.
