Nova Scotia is Offering New Immigration Pathways to Workers in the Restaurant Industry
Nova Scotia is now accepting food counter attendants, kitchen helpers, food and beverage servers, cleaners, and other related support occupations, through its Occupations in Demand stream.
Employers will be able to hire these workers without the need for a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) before offering the position. Moreover, employees will not need to work with the employer for six months before applying to Nova Scotia’s PNP.
According to a media release, business owners in the service industry have been experiencing labour shortages. To address this, Nova Scotia is making changes that will help employers hire newcomers with the skills they need.
“We’re excited to welcome newcomers who can help employers meet their labour needs and grow Nova Scotia’s population,” said Jill Balser, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration. “The tourism, restaurant and hospitality sectors are critical to our economy. These changes will help these industries hire the workers they need to prepare for a busy tourism season.”
These are the three new eligible occupations that Nova Scotia added to its Occupations in Demand immigration stream:
- Food and beverage servers – NOC 6513
- Food counter attendants, kitchen helpers and related support occupations – NOC 6711
- Light duty cleaners – NOC 6731

It is important to note that as of July 1, Nova Scotia’s population was at an all-time high of 992,055, which the province credits to increased immigration.
This stream targets specific NOC C and D occupations that are in high labour market demand in Nova Scotia. “The Office of Immigration identifies occupations in demand based on labour market information,” says the province’s website. Of course, eligible occupations are subject to change.
Furthermore, to apply you must:
- have a full-time permanent job offer from a Nova Scotia employer in either
- NOC 3413, 6513, 6711, 6731, 7511, 7521 and 7611.
- you also need to have 1 year of work experience related to the job and be 21 to 55 years old;
- in addition, you need to have a high school diploma, and the appropriate training, skills and/or accreditation for the job;
- you need to prove language ability equal to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 4 even if your first language is English or French;
- and show enough financial resources to successfully settle in Nova Scotia.
