The U.S. land border will be open soon to fully vaccinated Canadians
Fully vaccinated travellers from Canada will be able to enter the U.S. at land and ferry borders starting in November.
Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, mentioned that in alignment with new implementations that will take place in November, United States will allow travellers from Canada and Mexico to enter the country.
“In alignment with the new international air travel system that will be implemented in November, we will begin allowing travelers from Mexico and Canada who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to enter the United States for non-essential purposes, including to visit friends and family or for tourism, via land and ferry border crossings,” said Secretary Mayorkas in a government media release.
It is important to note the land border has been closed to non-essential travel for more than 18 months. However, at this time, Homeland Security has recognized the importance of cross-border travel.
“Cross-border travel creates significant economic activity in our border communities and benefits our broader economy.” Secretary Mayorkas added they are glad “to be taking steps to resume regular travel in a safe and sustainable manner.”
Congressman Brian Higgins broke the news in a written statement:
The reopening will happen in two phases
First, in November, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will allow fully vaccinated travelers from Mexico or Canada to enter the country. Of course, these travelers need to provide proof of vaccination.
The second phase will begin in early January 2022. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will require full vaccination for all foreign national travellers in order to cross U.S. land or ferry POEs.
According to the media release, this approach will provide time for essential travellers – whether they are travelling by air, land, or ferry –.
