U.S. will require all international travellers to take a COVID test within one day of departure

Today, December 2nd, 2021, the U.S. announced stronger public health protocols for international travellers.

According to a White House briefing, all travellers will soon need a negative COVID-19 test before going to the U.S. Regardless of nationality or vaccination status, travellers need the test taken within 24 hours of departing to the United States. Moreover, unvaccinated travellers cannot enter the U.S., with limited exceptions. The new rules will take effect early next week.

Also, the Biden Administration restricted travel from the countries in the region where the WHO identified the new Omicron variant. The President will announce additional steps to strengthen the safety of international travel.

This announcement comes just a day after Canada announced that U.S. travellers were exempt from the new travel measures. Currently, travellers arriving by air from all countries except the U.S. must get tested upon arrival at a Canadian airport. Fully vaccinated air travellers also need to quarantine while they await the results of their arrival test. You can read more about these measures, here:

About the New COVID-19 variant

On November 26th, The World Health Organization declared a new strain of coronavirus identified in South Africa a “variant of concern”. A variant of concern is the more serious designation. This variant of concern -named Omicron- has been detected in other countries.

As of November 30, 2021, Canada confirmed six cases of the Omicron variant of concern. The Government of Canada is assessing the situation, monitoring case data, and adjusting border measures as required.
