Canada welcomed 74,353 immigrants during the second quarter of 2021
During the second quarter of 2021, Canada welcomed 74,353 immigrants. This is the highest number for a quarter since the pandemic began, a report says.
Statistics Canada reported -on September 29- that this increase is in line with the recovery seen during the
first quarter of 2021 (+70,467). However, the amount of immigrants is still lower than the second quarter of 2019, before the pandemic.
Canada saw a net increase in non-permanent residents (+12,559) during the second quarter of 2021. The net increase was mainly due to additional work permit holders. According to the report, all provinces welcomed more non-permanent residents than those who left, except for Alberta.
Another interesting fact is that the number of people who moved to another province or territory in the second quarter of 2021 was the highest -for a second quarter- since at least 1972.
Ontario (-11,857) and Manitoba (-3,613) saw the highest net losses to interprovincial migration. Also, Saskatchewan (-3,362), Alberta (-5,447), the Northwest Territories (-254), and Nunavut reported losses.
The report says that British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Québec saw the highest gains from interprovincial migration for a second quarter since at least 1972.
